Billed as a hidden treasure, the Grade 2 listed Criterion is a theatre by night, an unusual venue in daylight. Look up and marvel at the stunningly decorative ceilings, painted and gilded, almost 140 years old. And enjoy the outside, a feast of French Renaissance design in pure white Portland stone. Renovated beautifully between 1989 and 1992, today it’s a famously well-preserved Victorian venue with a surprisingly intimate atmosphere and just under 600 seats. The 39 Steps has wowed audiences here since 2006, adapted by Patrick Barlow from the popular 1915 book by John Buchan. Peppa Pig transferred here for a Christmas season in 2010 and a new venture, Criterion Presents, launched in October 2011 to put on a very well-received programme of shows and events that run alongside the main show. Perfect for entertainment during lunchtimes, early in the evening and late at night. Roll up, roll up for the best Criterion theatre tickets in town!
